Bible Verses for a Prodigal Child
You raised her on these verses, and now she is far from them — or far from you, or from everything you prayed over her crib. The ache of a prodigal child is a particular one: love with nowhere to land. The Bible knows this ache well. It wrote a whole story about a father watching the road.
For the parent of a prodigal, the Bible’s best picture is Luke 15:20: “While he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.” God loves your child even more than you do — and He is watching the road too.
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.
This is what the LORD says: “Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come, declares the LORD. Then your children will return from the land of the enemy. So there is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children will return to their own land.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.
A memory verse to hold onto
If you keep one verse for this season, keep Luke 15:20 — the father sees the returning child “while he was still in the distance” and runs. Before the apology, before the explanation: compassion, at a sprint. That is the heart your child is walking back toward, and the heart that prays with you now.
What to pray for a prodigal child
Jeremiah 31:16-17 is God’s own word to weeping parents — “Keep your voice from weeping… your children will return from the land of the enemy.” Pray it back to Him. And when you cannot find words, Philippians 1:6 reminds you who finishes what He starts.
A prayer for my prodigal
Lord, You know exactly where my child is tonight, and You love them more than I ever could. Keep them in ways I cannot. Speak to them in ways they cannot ignore. Give me patience for the long road and hope for the turning. While I wait, fill the ache with Your presence. I trust them to Your hands, since they were always Yours first. Amen.
