Bible Verses for a Widow
The ring is still on your hand, but the hand you held is gone. Widowhood rearranges everything — the table, the finances, the future you planned together. God does not treat widows as an afterthought. He names Himself their defender, again and again.
Widowhood is a loneliness Scripture never overlooks. Psalm 68:5 calls God “A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows,” and Isaiah 54:5 tells her, “For your husband is your Maker” — the God of all the earth is near to her now.
A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in His holy habitation.
He executes justice for the fatherless and widow, and He loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing.
The LORD protects foreigners; He sustains the fatherless and the widow, but the ways of the wicked He frustrates.

The widow who is truly in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and prayers.
But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
God’s particular care for widows
Few groups get as many direct promises. Deuteronomy 10:18 says He “executes justice for the fatherless and widow.” Psalm 146:9 says He “sustains the fatherless and the widow.” When people fail to show up, His attention does not wander from you.
Ruth was a widow too
The Bible’s great story of loyalty begins with two widows and an empty road. Ruth’s words to Naomi — “wherever you go, I will go” — were spoken by a young widow to an old one, and God turned their grief into a lineage that led to Bethlehem. Your story is not over either.
A prayer for a widow
Lord, You see the empty side of the bed and the quiet of this house. Be my defender as You promise. Provide for me, steady me, and surround me with people who notice and care. Let me feel Your nearness in the loneliest hours. Give me strength for each day and hope for the ones ahead. You have always been faithful to me. Amen.
