Bible Verses for Someone in the Hospital
A hospital room shrinks the world to a bed, a door, and a window — for the one inside it, and for everyone waiting on the other side of that door. Whether it is your mother, your friend, or someone you love fiercely, these verses go into the room with you.
For someone in the hospital, Scripture sends help, not platitudes. Psalm 41:3 promises, “The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness,” and Jeremiah 17:14 gives the simplest prayer: “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed.” God is as present in that room as anywhere on earth.
The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness and restore him from his bed of sickness.
Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise.
Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”
A prayer you can pray at the bedside
You do not need long words. Jeremiah 17:14 is seven of them: “Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed.” Pray it holding her hand. Pray it in the elevator. God is not measuring length.
When you’re the one waiting in the hallway
The vigil is its own exhaustion. Isaiah 43:2 was written for hallways: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” You are not waiting alone, and neither is she.
A prayer for someone in the hospital
Lord, I lift up the one I love in that hospital bed. You see the monitors, the charts, the worry behind her eyes. Sustain her body and steady her spirit. Guide every doctor and nurse who cares for her. Be near to her in the long hours, and near to us while we wait. Bring her through this, and keep our hearts quiet in Your hands. Amen.
